F.W. 1229.34              CAS #11024-24-1

Digitonin is a steroidal saponin (saraponin) obtained from the foxglove plant Digitalis purpurea. Its aglycone is digitogenin, a spirostan steroid. It has been investigated as a detergent, as it effectively water-solubilizes lipids.

An additive which stabilizes cholesterol 0.2% digitonin in buffer added to Glutaraldehyde fixative may help to stabilize and retain the fine structural localization of free cholesterol and cholesterol esters. * Okros, I Histochemie 13-91, 1968.
