HANKS’s Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS)

Hanks‘ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) is composed of inorganic salts and supplemented with glucose. The solution may be used to wash cells and tissue and to maintain cells in a viable state. The solution is buffered with phosphate and maintains a physiological pH and osmotic pressure.

INFO+: Hanks salts are a collective group of salts rich in bicarbonate ions, formulated in 1940 by microbiologist John H. Hanks. [1] Generally, they are used as a buffer system in cell culture media and help maintain the optimal physiological pH (about 7.0 to 7.4) for cell growth. Due to their not very reactive nature and their low concentration in solution, Hanks salts are mainly used in environments exposed to atmospheric conditions, as opposed to incubation of CO 2. Performing the latter greatly exceeds the buffering capacity of Hanks salts and can result in cell death.
